What materials are commonly used to make these journals?

The most common materials I use to make kk_nola journals are: recycled paper, reused matboard, reused fabric, reused buttons, hemp twine, and non-toxic glue.

How did the materials I used in making this journal get to me? And, how do these materials impact the environment?

On the surface this is a very simple question to answer. The recycled paper is made of simple used office paper. I got the matboard from a frame shop. I found the fabric at home. The buttons are from my grandmother’s old sewing supplies. I bought the hemp twine at a craft store. And the non-toxic glue was bought at a drug store. It’s simple right? Well no, in fact the course of actions these materials went through to be produced, transported, and then somehow found or bought by me was undoubtedly a long and complex journey, and it is usually a journey to which we do not give much attention. To go deeper bringing attention to the origins of these materials and the environmental impacts these materials have on us, here are some product maps (as I like to call them). So what happens when these materials are thrown out and not reused?
